What does "needing a change" mean?

Change. Sounds big. Sounds scary, but it doesn’t need to be.

It’s tempting when we feel in need of a challenge or change of direction in our life or career to think that it has to be a big change, some sort of transformation, completely fresh start or mountain we could never face for any number of reasons personal, and often individual, to us.

And it’s true, change can be all of these things. It can be a transformation, but it can also be a tweak.

Some Qs and one A

I DO feel in need of a challenge or change of direction, does this mean I’ll need to quit my job?

I DO feel in need of a challenge or change of direction, does this mean I’ll have to start from scratch and learn a completely new subject, perhaps even go back to formal education?

I DO feel in need of a challenge or change of direction, does this mean I’ll have to start my own business?

You can do any (or all) of these things IF IT’S RIGHT FOR YOU AND YOUR SITUATION, but of course you don’t need to. You can make a meaningful change that benefits you and your happiness just by raising your head from the daily routine to see what more might be out there for you.

I deliberately said “what more” might be out there for you rather than “what else” because something doesn’t have to “wrong” before it can be “better”. Perhaps you just want to inject some fresh energy into your life.

The whole point is, it’s up to you.

A change could be taking up a new interest. A change could be looking for new challenges in your current role or workplace. A change could be developing your hobby into a side business while retaining the security of your current situation.

A change can be whatever you want it to be. You just need to figure out what it is.

The good news is the possibilities are almost endless. However, that’s the bad news too, because it can feel overwhelming.

So, here’s another Q. Where do I start?

I firmly believe you can write your way to any change you want to make. Everything you need to know is already within you, you just need to look for it. And that’s where journaling comes in.

When I knew I needed to make a change in my working life, as a writer and stationery lover I didn’t know how to do other than turn to a blank page to work it out. Call it what you will – a notebook, a journal, a diary – it was the place I worked out what I wanted to do and then planned a way to take action. Writing in this way helped me gain clarity and inspiration, and then, more importantly, take action based on what mattered to me most.
